PT, baby

Amber Adkins (left) and Sarah Gates were among the 10 PT students who helped in Tanzania

UIndy physical therapy faculty and students packed both expertise and open hearts for a four-week trip to the African village of Pommern, Tanzania,  in 2009–10. Amber Adkins (left) and Sarah Gates were among the 10 entry-level PT students who helped out with whatever was needed—meaning they applied their physical therapy skills in addition to working in the health clinic, farming, helping to rebuild a school, and teaching conversational English. Some students worked with a 16-year-old girl with cerebral palsy; some worked with young children. Others helped a woodworker make a pair of badly needed crutches.
