His best shot

National champ

Junior Ryan Smith claimed national champion honors in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in Birmingham, Alabama. Going into the finals, Ryan had to throw “four to five feet farther than I have ever thrown in my life,” and wanted to win it for his family and coaches. He did, throwing 18.59 meters to win the national championship.

Ryan also took second place in the men’s weight throw at 19.75 meters. Ryan, a marketing major from Lawrence North High School (Indianapolis), is a five-time All- American in track and field.

How does he feel about being number one?

“All I can do is smile and say that it feels right,” Ryan says, “and I am eager to do the same for next year in the shot put and hammer throw.”

Ryan is now training for the USA National Championships.
